Anyhow….
Today I ventured into Britannia Park in Ottawa to operate with the Ottawa Valley QRP Society members in one of their frequent outings. The event was the QRP to the field contest and we arrived just around 11am at the park.
Present were Pat VE3EUR, David VE3KL (Dave has a very informative column in “TCA -The Canadian Amateur” magazine every 2nd month, Bob VA3RKM and myself VA3QV. We quickly started to assemble and elevate antennas. Pat and Bob went with verticals, Dave operated with a homebrewed 20m rotatatable dipole and I used my 20m Vertical Delta loop. The antennas were installed and then we attached the feedlines and started to play radio. One thing immediately was realized. All the other operators but myself had forgotten to attach the Mike to the radios… I quickly brought this to the groups attention and was quickly informed that this was a CW contest…
I quickly checked the bands and heard a few voice stations on 20m for the Florida QSO Party but did not have any luck making any contacts. After that I decided to stow my gear and watch some fun contesting…My CW would have to improve greatly just to be considered bad…
Just as we were starting to shut down and pack up “Team Elecraft” showed up. Martin VA3SIE and Jerry VE3QSO arrived with their KX1′s. Jerry was working for the first time with his brand new rig…
Bob VA3RKM was using an Elecraft K2 and Pat VE3EUR was using his Icom 703. David VE3KL was using both rigs as he left his YAESU FT 857 at home. It was a great afternoon. The weather cooperated even if the band did not. The park was a bit crowded for my liking but it is a public location so we have to share…
All in all a great time was had by all.
