VC3C Report

I’ve just got back home after the days operating and the following words come to mind….

FUN, GREAT COMPANY. FANTASTIC, 6M OPENINGS….

The following words also came to mind….

WET, COLD, WINDY  &  BLACKFLIES….

Oh well….I STILL HAD A BLAST….

If you click here you will come to the usual Google Maps pic of the area….This time choose “Satellite” and then zoom in on the left hand side of the map.  I was set up in the same parking lot as the two orange school buses but at the opposite end of the lot.  A good shot to the south west and the west…

It was quite windy and the rain was a light mist.  There was some fog when I set up…

Now for the good part…

By my count thats:

1 grid on 70cm

2 grids on 2m

6 grids on 6m

All of this on a Sunday morning between 0930 and 1200 EASTERN

Notable contact.  Working VE3AAQ on all 3 bands.  I was blocked to the South East by the mountain and Dave was right in the South East.  I think his station was doing the work on that one…Also good to see the RAC President up and playing radio on a Sunday morning.  Thanks for the contacts Dave…

Other things of note:  The wind was so strong it blew my antenna down twice.  My masting was designed for a soft surface like a gravel parking lot not a paved one…the force of the wind on the beams caused the bottom of the mast to skid across the pavement.  Good thing my home brewed bracket kept the mast mostly vertical and stopped the fall.  I just bought those two beams and I would of hated to bend or break the elements.  Next addition will be some sort of holder I can drive on that uses the weight of the truck to keep the base stable…

DONT FORGET THE BUG SPRAY NEXT TIME  (memo to self)

All in all it was a great time….The group will be out and playing radio quite a bit in the next few months so check their website often for updates and schedules….

One Response to “VC3C Report”

  1. Some “Stuff” to get ready for… « VA3QV’s Weblog Says:

[...] On the Twitter Topic I see that the the CY9M (St Paul Island DXPediton ) has assembled in VE1 land in anticipation of their trip to the Island.  You can check their website ( http://www.cy9m.com ) or their twitter account ( https://twitter.com/CY9M  ) for more information.  As I mentioned earlier this DXPedition has an Eastern Ontario Flair to it as a couple of the Operators are from Cornwall Ontario.  I am hoping to get Kevin VE3EN and Steve VA3FM in the log as it would be really neat to work an operator I know.  Also it would be especially neat to work Kevin as he was one of my first contacts from the Champlain Trail activation of June 1 2008 when I was operating as VC3C.
