Some Early Observations from Haiti

Good Thursday Morning,

The news in Haiti is not good but the relief organisations are starting to get supplies and workers in to start the massive relief efforts.

From an Amateur Radio side of things (my opinion only) it seems that we have all the resources in place to assist IF needed.  The SATERN people are doing a good job of looking after H & W Traffic with a coordinated HF Net.  The ECHOLINK group of IRESC are in place with operators waiting to assist should they be needed.

However all the Amateur Radio Gear in North America is not going to do much unless there are people in Haiti to talk to and that so far seem to be the trouble.

I have not heard any traffic coming out of Haiti although there are reports of a Haiti Station checking in to the SATERN nets to check in and pass some H & W traffic.

Perhaps its just my location (Eastern Ontario) that is outside of the skip zone for Haiti and so others are hearing lots but to be honest I am not hearing that much and the people I am able to talk to are not hearing that much.

The Ottawa Citizen ran a report of a person who was trapped in a building collaspe in Haiti, text message the Dept of External Affairs in Ottawa to ask for assistance.  I guess not all the cellphone service was down  because a SAT Phone would not work when you are trapped in rubble with no shot at the open sky…

The link to the story is here:

via Canadian texts for help from rubble.

I guess “All else did not fail…”
