News from the weekend

This afternoon I will try and update you an all the past weekends events that I can remember….

As you know on Saturday I was in Limoges Ontario doing work on the antennas at the VE3DLJ Antenna farm.  Pleased to report that the work was very successfull and Doug is on the air a lot stronger than he was before…

The down side to this is that my Smart Phone did a stupid thing and got lost…  I didn’t lose it… it just walked away and left me…  Actually I was hoping that it had fallen off my belt while we were doing the installation of the masting outside and that it would of been found.  No such luck so far and with the snow we received in the region overnight I’m getting close to turning this into a recovery mission rather than a rescue mission.

Although I am enjoying the piece and quiet… No phones ringing…  I do realize I will have to replace the unit in the very near future so Santa if your listening…. Make sure it runs on the “Android” operating system as I have heard some good things about that…

I spent a good deal of the weekend on the new RAC Social Media side of things…  The Twitter account @RACTWEETS is growing in leaps and boundzzzz and is up to 88 followers.  As I said earlier in the scope of the internet its not really a big thing but it has almost doubled its following over the weekend and now  88 people who are getting their news in a new way so I’m pleased.  Will it continue???  Dunno but I am trying my best.

The same could be said for the RAC Facebook page which has had a couple of comments thrown on its wall by someone other than me.  One from a contester in VE7Land and the other from a brand new VA3amateur.

Welcome to the hobby Jordan… I hope you have as much pleasure from it as I have had over the years… (If you want Jordan’s callsign then look on the wall)

Over the weekend I even managed to install a new antenna for the APRS Rig so if you follow APRS Locally in Ottawa you should see my VA3QV Beacons fairly strongly.  If your looking on APRS.Fi then you won’t notice the difference as I got into the IGATE before and I still do now…

I also managed to get out an make some HF Contacts on the Sunday so it was a good time.  No real rare DX… Actually no DX at all but some local (VE2 and VE3) contacts on 40 and 80m always makes the afternoon go quicker.  I did manage contacts into VE4 and VE7 on 20m when I checked into the Trans Canada Net on 14.140 at their 1300est start time.  My W3EDP although it does load up on 20m fairly easy is not the best on the higher bands (10-12-15-17 &20m)  I am thinking of going with a vertial for those bands and then using the W3EDP for 40-80  & 160m.  Time will tell…

I also was impressed with the coverage LASA-8 has recieved.  On Friday I was interviewed by a Reporter for the Canadian Press on the recent flight of LASA-8.  On Sunday morning the reporter emailed me and let me know the url of the first newspaper that picked up the story from the Wire Service.  I think at last count (but that is changing) our story has been picked up by the print media in Manitoba and Ontario along with CTV News on a National Level.

Despite the minor setback as I did lose the HTC Maple …  It was a great weekend… How was your weekend?
