North East Ontario Regional Directors Report for February, 2012

Some Amateurs have been asking about distracted driving so here is a status report on the exemption that RAC is seeking for Ontario Amateurs. You will remember last year Steve Pengelly, VE3STV, Jeff Stewart, VE3WXM and I made a presentation to MTO officials requesting an exemption for Amateurs from Ontario Legislation 366/09. The MTO officials asked for some time to think this through and made a commitment to contact us in early 2012. We expect to hear from them in the next several months. At the moment we are advising all Ontario Amateurs to wait for a reply from MTO. If the reply is in our favour, end of story. If not we have several ideas in the works. They include but are not limited to, targeting MPP’s, and a letter writing campaign from 3rd party groups, who we support with our province wide communications infrastructure at no cost to the taxpayer. Stay tuned.

The Committee to reform the Ontario’s Field Services has now finished its report and it is in the hands of Doug Mercer, VO1DTM. Watch for an official RAC bulletin from him on the details in the next while. I will talk more about this next month.

As I have mentioned in the last several Directors reports membership in RAC is actually increasing. Again slowly but it is increasing. Membership in the Mapleleaf Membership category is at 140 members. I would like to thank all those members who have renewed or rejoined Radio Amateurs of Canada at either membership level. I believe it shows Canadian Amateurs understand the need for a strong national organization to speak for all Canadian Amateurs.

While the books for 2011 have not gone to the auditors yet, we will end the year in the black and are budgeting for the same in 2012. It should come as no surprise that RAC was “fiscally challenged” for the last few years. We have turned this situation around and RAC is on its way to economic stability.

We are still looking for a Treasurer for RAC. If you have a professional certification and are familiar with Quick Books please contact me.

Finally one of my favourite operating events is coming up on February 4. It’s the Freeze Your Buns Off QRP event. This year we will be operating in the back field of the North West Ontario Seniors Amateur Radio Club station at the 55+ Center in Thunder Bay. Please give a listen for VE3XT who will be operating from my favourite snow bank.

If you have any questions or concerns please email me at ve3xt@rac.ca.

Country count climbing

January 30, 2012

Since I got the new gear up and running a few months ago my Country Count has slowly been climbing…  Today I managed to work TN2T (Republic of Congo) on 20m and after I got everything entered in the log I got an email from HRD Log that looked like this:

Congratulation,
Just reached 119 countries worked!

Personally I thought it was a nice touch…  Now bear in mind thats not 119 confirmed butI have sent 119 different countries an EQSL with a not so stellar return rate.  I think I actually have about 45 confirmed so there is still a way to go.  But also seeing that the ARRL and EQSL don’t see eye to eye on the DXCC program I guess I will have to upload my complete HRD Log File to LoTW one of these days.

You can see my last 15 contacts and a map of where my contact have been by following this link…

I have been talking about it for a while now and my plan is to send out a couple of runs of QSL cards out via the Buro and then also upload the log file to LoTW at the same time.  I figure between EQSL, via the Buro and finally via LoTW  will just about cover all the bases to get some of these countries confirmed… When I started using HRD as a logging program I really liked the idea that it would send out an EQSL for me every time I logged a contact.  I still do like that feature… Its the easiest for me right now…  I just wish more amateurs were on EQSL and then my problems would be over…

With the recent announcement that the ARRL and CQ had worked out an arrangement for LoTW  and  I tend to agree with lots of the other bloggers who say this could spell the end of Paper QSLs…  The electronic highway seems to speeding up the process and most people seem to be in such a hurry these days…

However if everyone I worked in the next CQ WW SSB contest was on LoTW there would be an excellent chance that I could get my DXCC and WAS done and confirmed in one weekend…  Then the question could be asked  “What do you do for an encore?”

 The process continues…

Good DX my friends…

SPAR Winter Field Day 2012 for VA3RCS and VA3QV

January 29, 2012

Its getting close to the end of the event…  but for me it was a fun day so it was a good day…

Thanks to SPAR for running the event.

Although its my traditional lousy picture…. I might have a “Smart Phone” but the operator is still me so its a lousy picture…  Shown is the Park Bench I was operating as VA3RCS from on Saturday.  The City removed the Picnic Tables for the winter so I needed to use the park bench.  The black bag is an old padded camera bag I got at a yardsale and my complete portable station fits inside it.  On top of the bag is my FT817/LDG QRP Autotuner combo and the 10ah battery was inside the camera bag in an attempt to keep it warm.  Being secured with a Bungee Cord to the park bench is one end of my Par End Fedz QRP (10-20-40m) end fed long wire.  It will work on 15m (along with 12 and 17) using the autotuner but was not used on those bands yesterday.  The purple thingy is just a padded device I use to insulate my butt from the cold wooden park bench…  its called a cushion…  The tree I mention later in the post is just out of picture range to the left of the cushion…

Anyway if you  check yesterdays posting   you know where I operated from and that I operated as VA3RCS for the event…

Heres what happened at Weston Park operating as VA3RCS ….

I departed my home at about 1115hrs EST and walked over to the park.  Its been a while since I’ve been there and I found out that this year the City removed the picnic tables for the winter time…  Oh Well ….  they used to be there….  The Park Benches are not removable so I still had someplace to operate from…

I got my weighted line over a tree line about 35 feet or so up.  When I swung the bottom end of the antenna over to the park bench the line was tight so all was good.  The antenna was mostly in  a vertical configuration with very slight sloper aimed south west.  The SWR was good and the tuner not needed so as the time approached 12 noon EST which was the start of the Winter Field Day all was good…

In hindsite it might of been a smarter move to start a hour or so after the contest started as most of the operators were having a bit of a problem with the exchanges (especially the honest signal report and getting the temps right as some were in F and others were using C).  It did make the pileups longer as some just had a great problem hearing the reports.  This I really find confusing as every time I operate from a park location I seem to find a very quiet location to work from…  Hearing the stations is never a problem…  getting them to hear my QRP Signal sometimes is a problem…  Can’t understand why someone setting up in a portable location would pick a noisy location to play from…  Maybe its just me…

Anyway….  I started to call CQ and my first contact was on 40m was wtih WG3J (Eric in MD) and he had a great signal.  He gave his temp as 45deg F so for him its more like a “Spring Field Day” compared to us up here…  I also managed to work Eric on 20m later that hour…  I also managed to check in with Shawn VE3PSV who was running the Trans Provincal Net and got all the details for the exchange from him.  I also managed to work N8UO (Warren in Minnesota) who at a balmy 23 deg F was even colder than my temp here in Ottawa (0 deg C)…  Along with a local contact on 2m thats about as good as it got here in the park and the reason for that was…

The last few days in Ottawa we have had a mixed bag of weather…  Freezing Rain and snow….  The branches of the trees were covered with freezing rain and now in the afternoon the sun was coming out and warming things up slightly…  Normally this would of been fantastic for a winter outing but my park bench (along with all the other park benches) seem to be underneath trees.  Something about shade for the summertime I guess….  But now the branches are warming up and the ice is melting…  Its like operating in the rain…  My log book is getting wet…  I am getting wet and I am forced to take off the outer shell of my coat to keep the radio dry…  Then the wind blows….  Its like being in an ice storm all over again…  Pieces of Ice falling all around and also on top of me and for some silly reason I have no hardhat in my go kit…

At this point I’ve been outside for about 90 minutes so far and am starting to lose my sense of humour…  I’m not really freezing yet and the batteries are still good  but …  enough is enough….  So I pack up and head home….  After stopping for a coffee at Starbucks I’m back home warm and dry just after 1400 eastern…  I put the gear away after drying it and then had to head out for some non amateur stuff.  Returned about 1600 and got back on the air under the VA3QV call.

My score (as silly as it seems )was not too bad for less than two hours…

Operating as VA3RCS  Class 1 O  operating temp 0 deg c

5 contacts on 3 bands for a total of 15 points.

1000 pt bonus for operating outdoors

1000 pt bonus for operating from a park

1000 pt bonus for operating battery power

Gave me a whopping score of 3015 points.  Which is not a bad score till you figure that if I did not make a contact I still would of made 3000 points…  Oh well it was fun till the tree leaked…

Now its operating time for VA3QV…  After heading back home I found myself back in the shack…  I spun the dial on 40m and managed to find VE3OKV operating Winter Field Day  for the Oakville ARCI then jumped up to 20m and worked VE3JJF in KenoraJustin VE3XTI was the radio operator and they were in an Ice Fishing shack on Lake of the Woods.  It sounded like they were having a great time.  I also managed to work VE3JJF on 80m later in the evening at a distance of just under 1500kms .

Although i don’t think they were part of the contest I did also manage to work  HK0NA  into the log on 20m.  This makes the third band for me with this DXPeditions with earlier contacts on 80m and 17m

Operating as VA3QV I was just trying to give out contacts for the Winter Field Day but it seems the bands were starting to close up…  Not hearing much on 20 and 40 was open for DX but nothing close in I decided to call it a night and shut down…

Sunday morning I went hunting for Bill VE3CLQ who was participating in WFD with the Frontenac ARES Group.  I was able to work their station on 40m…  but missed Bill as he was operating 20m at the time and the distance between Ottawa and Kingston was a little short for a 20m contact.

So all in all (despite the ice falling on me) it was a great weekend for radio…  How was your weekend…

Looking back at previous attempts at Winter Field Day

January 28, 2012

Its 10am est here in Ottawa and I am about to get dressed and get the gear ready to head out to Weston Park for the Spar Winter Field Day event….  I just thought I would let you look into the past and see how this event turned out for me in previous years….

SPAR Winter Field Day 2009

SPAR Winter Field Day 2010 and also Here

SPAR Winter Field Day 2011

However this years event (2012) will be a solo op.  I was offered a chance to go out with the OVMRC crew and it would of been a blast but I could not commit to the amount of time I thought it would of been necessary to particiapte.  This year its easier just to take the toys to the local park and play for as long as I can and then go home again.  I would hate for the group to be counting on me and then not be able to give them the time needed….

However now matter how little time I get to participate it is an excellent exercise for those of us who participate in EMCOMM activities.  As my friend Bill VE3CLQ mentioned in his blog…  Its harder to do stuff with frozen fingers…

As far as particiaption from Ontario goes….  There are supposed to be a couple of stations on the air from Ottawa, Kingston will be represented by Frontenac ARES,  the Oakville ARC will have a station on the air and I know of one hardy soul in Kenora who will be on the air.  Most likely there will be more but thats all I have seen info on…

So if you are an Amateur but wont be outside give a listen for the stations calling CQ Winter Field Day and give us the contact for the log…   If you see something looking funny in the park today remember its just a Ham Radio Operator freezing to prove he can provide Emergency Communications if needed…

Emergencies don’t always happen Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm in nice weather…

ps….  Will be posting my results here along with lessons learned after I get home and defrost…

Getting ready for SPAR Winter Field Day

January 28, 2012

Starting Saturday (tomorrow) at noon eastern time comes the SPAR Winter Field Day.  If you follow the link you will get the rules and scoring etc which is what you would need to participate…

I am planning to operate as VA3RCS (my other call) .  As I am sitting outside for the event and its wintertime using the call Victor  Alpha   Real  Cold  Spot seems to fit right in with the plans for the day…

I will be operating from either a park bench or picnic table from Weston Park in Ottawa.  I’ve been there before and its about a 1km walk from my place with a Starbucks about 1/2 way so its a great place to operate from.  When operating outdoors in the winter time its hard to argue with close and coffee.  There is an outdoor rink there so if the rink shack  is open there also is a chance of indoor washrooms and a place to warm up a bit if needed…

The rig of the day will be my FT817 along with my LDG QRP Auto tuner.  I plan to use my Par endz fed antenna for 10-20-40m (and it will do 15m with the tuner) and my Buddistick will be the backup antenna.  The contest allows me the VHF bands so I will also have my 6m dipole antenna there which works fairly well on 2m and 6m.  The plan is to call CQ till the batteries give out, the radio freezes up or I freeze up.  According to the Weather Network  the chances of the radio freezing up are fairly slim so its a coin toss to see what gives out first.  Me or the batteries…

Weston Park for Winter Field Day

To be honest if I can get two hours of operating in before freezing I would be more than pleased.  Once I get home I will give out some contacts as VA3QV and see how many stations I can contact…

Hope to hear you tomorrow…

HK0NA (Finally) :)

January 26, 2012

There are a lot of stories that begin with “Well you have to get up pretty early to…” <fill in the blank with your experiences> and today seems to follow that style of writing…

As you know for a few days now I have been attempting to reach the HK0NA Dxpedition on Malpeno Island with no luck whatsoever…  Today after getting up at the ungodly hour of 0600 eastern and staggering down into the shack I managed to make the much desired contact (before I even finished my first cuppa coffee)  on 80m (3.770) at 0630 eastern.  The rig was my FT 450 at 100w and the antenna was my S9 43 foot Vertical.    Not a big gun station by any means but this morning on my 3rd day of trying it was enough…

They say the Early Bird gets the worm….  This early bird got the DX but really wants to go back to bed for a few hours….

UPDATED AS OF 0813 EST

Did not go back to bed and came back down  to the shack and checked the cluster…

Saw that HK0NA was active on 17m (SSB) and got them on then first call.  I guess good things do happen to those who waits….  OR the band conditions are improving…

HK0NA (Nearly)

January 25, 2012

I am starting to wonder about this one….  Again on 17m with no other stations in the way that he could hear….

He called and gave his exact split frequency….  I replied…. no joy…  But no one else got him either….  He acknowledged no one and just called again…  I replied and had no joy again…  He stopped calling for 3′s and started calling for 4′s….

Wow…  Perhaps its not me then….

This is becoming harder than it looks (or should be…)   Its almost due south of me and only 2400 miles to boot…  I’ve worked further with less trouble but the problem seems to be the same on all the bands listed for him on the cluster…  I hear him working VE2 and VE3s with no problems but even when I have a clear freq he can’t hear me…

It could give  a guy a complex…

I decided to spin the dial and managed to work a few different stations on the bands and although none were due south the reports showed that my gear is working so its either a lack of conditions due south or… something is blocking my signals to the south…  Because as we know and you can just ask any amateur about this and he will tell you that…

It can’t be me as my gear is working fine…

On the lighter side of things I still have a couple of weeks to get them in the log and I will just have to keep on trying…

W9W- a class act

January 24, 2012

Back on October 23rd (a Sunday afternoon ) while I was sitting in the shack blogging about the fun I had out at the Long Island Lock station with Jose VA3PCJ on the Saturday,  I managed a contact with W9W who was operating from US Island WI048R in Wisconsin.

Well today in the mail came a full color QSL card from them.  This was unexpected…  The postage on the card was almost a buck so its safe to say that for a two sided color QSL card it would cost at least a dollar a card so this group spent  an average of a $1.50 to send out QSLs to all contacts.  This is no mean feat…  In the past I have sent out QSLs out via the buro for special event stations and mini DXPeditions but to swallow the postage for every contact could cost them as much as the radio cost they made the contacts with…

Like I said…  A class act

Thanks to the crew of W9W which consisted of  W9MZ, KC9MRV, KC9KOO, KC9KOP, KB9TPG, KC9NHQ, KC9LBO, W9JR and KC9UJM

HK0NA (almost)

January 24, 2012

Earlier today while sitting the shack I checked the cluster and found that HK0NA (Malpelo Island)  was active on 17m.  I spun the dial and hit the tune button and could just tell someone was there.  After playing with the DSP settings for a bit I had a very clear signal coming through just above the noise level.  It would of been a honest 5X5 or a contest 5X9…

However it was not to be as there were many who could not hear the words ” Listening 5 to 10 down…”  And everytime one of the many replied on the DX stations calling frequency there were the DX cops who were very quick to point out the error being made…. This just made it harder to hear HK0NA so to be honest I don’t know if they heard me or not…

Well at least I heard them….  And if everyone remembers the DX code of conduct  perhaps in the next few days they might hear me…
