The Sand Point Lighthouse CA 0034

Picture taken August 6th using my Android Phone

Just heard back from the IILW and they have accepted the Sand Point Light  (now CA 0034)as our (VA3QV/VA3PCJ) entry in the IILW event on August 18th-August 19th 2011.

Above is the location of the Lighthouse

We will be operating from that location on Saturday August 18th and perhaps the 19th as well…

The rigs will be the IC 703 belonging to VA3PCJ and my FT 817 so yes both will be QRP.  As this is not a contest we will be operating wherever we have conditons between 6m and 40m (including the WARC Bands)  and we will have vertical antennas  for those bands.  Jose can operate CW and I am mostly SSB.  Bands and mode depend solely on the conditions of the bands at the time…

IF YOU HEAR US PLEASE SPOT US ON THE CLUSTER

Not to Jinx us but the long range WX forcast is showing good so far but we do have 11 days to go but I can hope…  Other than making sure the batteries are charged there is not that much to do…  Print out some log sheets… Work on designing a special QSL Card and resting up…

It will be a “Fun Event”

Also during the same event give a listen for the Ottawa Valley Mobile Radio Club operating VE3RAM from the Lighthouse at the Science Museum in Ottawa (CA0016)

As well the Frontenac EMCOMM Group will be operating from CA0031 (Nine Mile Point) as VE3FCT and also from CA0026 (Point Petre) as VE3FRG  Give a listen for them as well…

With 4 lights activated Eastern Ontario will be a busy place that weekend…

As the event is over 10 days away I will have updated information for you on the Sand Point Light and if the others as well if I can get any fresh news…

Bob, Nice light you found to operate from!! Hopefully we will be able to work light to light. I’ll be down at the Point Petre light operating with the FT-857D and a 80m OCF Dipole and a 31′ vertical.

      Hi Bill,
Thanks for the visit and the comments… We drove down yesterday and it was a nice location…

Only issue is that we have no trees or anything…. One vertical will be attached to the Jeeps trailer hitch (VA3PCJ has a jeep) and I will be using a mfj 31 foot mast to support my Par end fed as a slight sloper. No protection from the elements… wind comes down the river to keep the bugs away but no trees – no shade and its too windy for beach umbrella ,,,

40m would be our best chance for a contact.

hope to hear you on the air..

    Hey Bob (and Bill),

I am planning on getting out for this event too. I have been in contact with IILW and have gotten two lighthouses along the St Lawarence listed, Prescott Heritage Harbour / Prescott Breakwater / Prescott Harbour Outer is CA0035 and Windmill Point is CA0036 a bit further east and a Historical site as well.

I am planning on being one or the other perhaps both that weekend depending on the weather and what other public events may be going on. This being the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 there are events going on all summer Fort Wellington in Prescott is close to both of these site.

    cheers, Graham ve3gtc

Adding to the participation from Eastern ontario… Hope to hear you on the air as well… Figuring 40m will be the only chance we have as we will be too close for 20m and 80 is no good during the daytime…
