2009 FYBO/CF3RCS final

February 14, 2009

It seems that Martin VA3SIE … and myself were having some problems with our email service as his emails to me did not bounce back but were sitting somewhere in cyberspace.  Don’t know were they were but I know where they wern’t….MY IN BOX!!!

Here is the link to Martin’s website and report on CF3RCS and the 2009 FYBO

Also here are a couple of pictures courtesy of Martin of a couple of “frozen hams…” who were having fun in the fresh and frosty air…

Video of CF3RCS contact

February 11, 2009

While I was participating in the FYBO last Saturday I had a memory lapse and actually forgot to keep the camera turned on just incase I actually made a contact.

2009 FYBO Preliminary Report

February 7, 2009

GAWD was it cold!!!!!

How cold was it????

brass01

Although I have been outside recently in much colder temps it was a damper cold today that really chilled my tired old bones.  Two weeks ago we froze up the 817 at a -30 or so temp.  Today at -15 seemed colder….

But enough of my whinning….

Martin VA3SIE and myself VA3QV operated for a couple of hours from Vincent Massey Park.  I made contacts on 80m and 40m voice and Martin made contacts on 20cw and 40cw.

Now at this time Martin and myself have not combined the logs so that will have to wait for another posting but for my side of things the short version is :

80m- one contact in NY

40m- 4 contacts, Ohio,  Indianna PA, and West Virginia

If I had been operating this as a single station then the results would of been as follows:

5 contacts X 5 states=25

Field multi X4 plus alternative power X2 and temp multi X5

25 X4 X2 X5 = 1000 points

I am sure that once we factor in the CW station contacts the score will definately grow…

It was fun…  Thanks to Martin for joining me on this one.  It seems that everytime I head out for something crazy like the Maple Island Bike DXPedition, the Bate Island Canada Winter Contest DXPedition or our latest the 2009 FYBO  Martin is just as crazy and shows up to participate.  Its nice to know that I am not the only crazy one in the group…

Martin took some pics and some vids and I took some vids and I know they will be posted in the near future…

It was fun but it was cold…

CF3RCS testing on Sunday Feb 1

February 1, 2009

VA3QV will be operating his QRP Station CF3RCS on Sunday mid morning as the final test before the 2009 FYBO on Feb 7th.  I will be using the FT817 with LDG QRP Auto tuner.  The rig will be powered by a 10ah sla battery pack.  The antenna will be a home made 10-80 vertical that is approx 30 feet in length.  The antenna is center loaded with loading coil at the 15 foot mark.  The antenna uses the metal body of the Pick Up truck as the ground plane but also has the option of attaching wire radials if needed for a better match.  In the past this antenna has worked quite well at the 100w level using my FT 857 and I have no doubts about its success using QRP Power levels.

Assuming that all works out fine this will be the same setup that will be used in the FYBO next weekend.

As usual there will be Survivorham Videos taken and they will be posted Sunday late afternoon on the You Tube Site.  The WX is forcasted to be much warmer and I looking forward to a pleasent afternoon in the park.

If you get a chance I hope to be on 80m for the Ontars Net around 11am or so, the Trans Provincal Net at 7.055 for the Ontario Swap Shop then over to 20m at 14.140 for the Trans Canada Net later.

As long as the WX holds and the battery lasts I should be out for a couple of hours at least…

Sundays report

January 18, 2009

Sunday morning found a good cup of coffee and some piece and quiet in the shack.  I checked into the North Bay Net on 3.768 with Paul VA3PC as the NCS and then dialed down just a bit to 3.760 for (you guessed it) the Pot Hole Net courtesy of the OVMRC.

Larry VE3WEH was the NCS and it was an enjoyable hour from 10am to 11am…  Ed VE3GX, Roger VE3NPO, Maurice-Andre VA2MA/m, Norm VE3LC and myself has an excellent roundtable and passed around some interesting bits of information…

After the net I decided to get into my “Survivorham” Gear and then head over to Hutton Park.  The WX was not as cold as it had been earlier in the week but there was an unexpected wind chill.  The verticals that I planned to test did not work exactly as expected and so now I am thinking about a delta loop for next Sundays test.

In the past I have had good results with this same antenna and I am hoping for the same.  I do have my tried and true 88 foot doublet which does work fantastic but I am hoping for an antenna which only uses one vertical support as I’m not sure where we will be operating from for the FYBO and I would hate to get there to find the trees are no cooperating….

Anyway if you would like to see todays attempts at radio check out the You Tube site and look for Survivorham 8 to Survivorham 14.

As far as everything else goes its very quiet here at the home QTH with daughter Erika staying at friends so she can attend Carleton University while the transit strike continues here in Ottawa (a friend of hers lives close to the campus) and with Trisha in Gananoque,  Liz and myself have the house to ourselves and with the exception of looking after “Toby and Saber” (see Trisha I got the name right this time) it will be a very quiet time….

CF3RCS warm???up- Weekend update

January 16, 2009

Now there two phrases you do not usually hear together… CF3RCS (Canadians Freezing 3  Real Cold Spot) and Warmup.  The last times this callsign was used all involved winter and outdoor operations and this weekend will be no exception.

This Sunday you stand a chance of hearing CF3RCS around 1300 hrs EASTERN in the 20m band on or about 14.140 as I will be testing my newly constructed 20m vertical which I plan to use for the FYBO on Feb 7th.

If you follow this link to the Weather Network Website you will see that Sundays Temps are calling for a range of -20C as a low to -12C for a high.  Now I agree that this is not exactly what I would call suntan weather but compared to the -30C in Ottawa Friday morning when I woke up and its -25C now the -12C high seems kinda balmy…

Saturday I plan to recharge the 10ah battery pack and then reassemble the setup (battery pack, FT817 and autotuner) into its insulated operating bag in preparations for Sundays outing.

I will take some pictures of the assembly process and post them here on Saturday and on Sunday there will be some videos and they will be posted on the You Tube Site and if you follow the link you will see last weeks videos (Survivorham 1-6) from Hutton Park which was the first testing of the 40m/80m inverted L antenna set up along with the FT817 battery and auto tuner combo.

Last Sunday efforts proved the equipmemnt worked and now I am just trying to get a more effecient antenna system in place.

I have chosen Sunday afternoon for the test really just because the Trans Canada Net runs on 14.140 in that timeframe and its always easier to test equipment at net time as there are people out there specifically listening for weaker signals and I figure my 5 watts of RF into a home made 20m vertical with some radials laid across the snow will most likely produce a weak signal…

If you have the chance and you are within radio range on Sunday give a listen and you might get an early contact with CF3RCS along with the coveted CF3RCS Special QSL Card.

I’m baaaaacccccckkkkk!!!

January 10, 2009

Sorry about being MIA for most of the week….  There were some issues at the QTH that prevented me from being close to the computer for a few days…   None of them were serious….  Just time consuming so…..

Here we go on a multitude of topics or the week in review….  Later this weekend I will dwell more on upcoming items of interest…

Ottawa had its first real big snow storm this week and VA3QV/m was a casulty.  The truck ran flawlessly on its trip last weekend  from Ottawa to Gananoque and return.  Then we had some snow….  I was driving in downtown Ottawa after the snow fall (according to some around 25cms) and I found a street that the plow had left a snow bank across…

Well we aren’t going to let a small snowbank stop my powerful Ford Pickup are we!!!!  Wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!  Anyway the damage to the front end is minor and should be fixed early this coming week.  As soon as my mechanic can get both front wheels pointing in the same direction I will be mobile again….  I guess the bank was a little more solid than I thought…..

The biggest inconvience with this one is that due to the goshdarn OC Transpo strike is that now I am getting more exercise than I should be as I can’t take the bus anywhere….

On the topic of the OC Strike…  As I mentioned in previous postings the Federal Labour Minister forced a vote on the Citys last contract offer and much to everyones suprise it did not get accepted.  One thing to mention is that there was almost a 98% vote in favour of the strike when it started and that support has dropped by close to 30% now.  Unfortunately 98-30 is still greater than 50% so the strike continues…  I feel these strikers are now in for a long time off…  The public support is dropping with most people feeling the city should stick to their guns….  Seeing that VA3QV/m is not on the road my daughter can not depend on Dads Taxi and so she is being forced to miss some classes as the 2 hour walk to Carleton University then the 1 hour walk from the University to her part time job then the 2 hour walk home becomes a it much.  The other day on one of the colder days (way too cold to walk) she spent $70.00 in Taxis.  This shows dedication as she does not make $70.00 a day at her part time job but she did fufill her commitments to the educational system and her employer….   This can not continue for much longer….

How cold was it????  If you check my earlier postings you will se a picture of my QSL Card for the 2009 FYBO.  Thats how cold it was….    Anyway with the problems with the Ford I have not been able to scout out any good operating locations for the event.    Right now the Brewer Park Area (across from Carleton University) or Vincent Massy Park  are both looking fairly good as they are both easily accessable and have a large plowed parking lot.  I have yet to check them for noise…. And once I do I will let you know how things look…  At this time Martin VA3SIE has agreed to be the CW Operator with his KX1 and I will be operating Voice with my FT817.  There is also a Polar Bear QRP Event at the same time so Martin will be doing double duty as he is a member of that group.  Two QRP events at the same time should help out as the bands still seem to be shaky at best…

Thats about all for this Saturday morning…..  As the wheels are broken I plan to spend most of the weekend in the shack….  This hopefully will be a good weekend for amateur radio….

The past weekend…

January 5, 2009

Its now Monday morning and things are starting to get back to normal after the “holidays”…

The day started this am with a “Dads Taxi” trip from home to Carleton University where Erika needed to be to sign some OSAP Papers and then for a 12noon class.

The OC TRANSPO union will be having a forced vote on Thursday and if the membership goes against the unions suggestion and accepts the Citys offer we might get our busses back on the road in about 10 days or so.  Now this has nothing to do with radio but the strike has caused me to have to change many plans so I can get family members back and forth between school, work and various appointments and it is sure hard to sympathise with those who are on strike who were making more than I made before the strike and will be making more than I ever made after the strike.  Although I do grant them the right to strike, taking their actions in December which adversely affected those who take public transport at a very difficult and cold time of the year has not helped their public image whatsoever and not really garnered the union any public support…

I for one am starting to get fed up with the heavier traffic, the Dads Taxi Runs and the lack of parking spots anywhere in the city…  If they don’t come back soon…they can stay out till ….

Anyway lets get back to radio after my mini-rant…

As you know I took Trisha to Gananoque this Saturday and the radio work was not the best…  I made only two  contacst on 40m (VE3GX in Ottawa via groundwave and VE9HC in Hartland NB) and one contact on the Kingston Repeater and two contacts on the Smith Falls Repeater.  The trip itself kind of had me wondering why I bothered to even hook up the antennas for the trip…

Sunday was slightly better with me joining the North Bay Net on 3.768 at 0900 which took me into the Pothole Net on 3.760 here in Ottawa at 1000 hrs.  I was hoping to hear the Ontario Swap Shop on 40m at noon but there were only digital sounds on 7.055 with some CW as well so I’m guessing that the Swap Shop was pushed off the air due to longer than usual band conditions…

Around 1400 Hrs I was able to check into the Trans Canada Net on 14.140 with VE7TA as the NCS.  This proved that the antenna changes done earlier in the week worked but there is still some work to go yet…

I took some time off to do the shopping thing with Liz and then came back into the shack around 1800 and was able to check into the sandbox net and although I did not write down his call he was located outside Boston Mass, which once again proves that the bands are going longer… earlier in the evenings still…

I came up to 3.755 in anticipation of the 80m version of the Ontario Swap Net but just as the net started the band started to go even longer and all was lost to me atleast…

I can’t help but to feel sorry for those new hams who have heard us talking about how good the band conditions used to be…  We were even talking about how things would be changing for the better by now…  It ain’t happened yet…  I hope we have not lost any bodies to various other interests as they wait for the sunspot cycle that seems to elude us…

I have scouted out a potential site for my CF3RCS participation in the FYBO and will be testing it out this Saturday (or Sunday or both days)for an hour or so…  More info on this later in the week but I hope to set up the 817/tuner combo on the tailgate of the truck and string out the doublet between two friendly trees and check out the noise level…  You can’t even start to guess about propagation so just seeing how good or bad the noise floor is will have to do…

Enjoy the week and more updates later

CF3RCS gearing up for the 2009 FYBO

January 4, 2009

fybo2009qslDue to random chance that someone decided to apply for a special prefix for the VA/VE calls for the first two months of 2009, I have decided to do some local DXPeditions using  the special event prefix in conjunction with my VA3RCS Call to become CF3RCS.

Canadians Freezing 3 Real Cold Spot

The callsign CF3RCS has not been active since December 2006 when some local amateurs and my self activated Bate Island for the RAC Canada Winter Contest.

The link to the previous activation is here.

The biggest challenge for doing a DXPediton outdoors in the wintertime here in Eastern Ontario is not the freezing cold tempetures but the access to the good locations.  I was out yesterday and actually scouted out the location I really wanted to operate from and found that the parking lots were barricaded and the road had been plowed open for only one lane and that access was restricted to emergency traffic only…

Over the next week I plan to scout a few choice operating locations and firm up the plans for operating.  Right now as the QSL Card above indicates I will be operating for the FYBO QRP Contest.  This contest is a bit longer than a sprint (10 hours) but for us in the EASTERN time zone it will be mostly in daylight hours so hopefully the sun will make things tolerable or at least give me at least enough time to make a few contacts before I have to fire up the propane heater to thaw out…

As mentioned earlier more info on this once I have firmed up locations…  The operating will be done on the weekends…  as thats when everyone else is off and listening…

The mode will be QRP not because I am trying to prove anything, but the batteries are lighter and in the past I have found if I can find a location with a low noise floor and trees to string the doublet out the need for 100w is not great.

But it is true that a 2.5 ah sla weighs a lot less than my 30ah battery pack!!!

Of course something about it being a QRP Contest might have a little to do with things though…

Especially if you are humping all your gear into a remote location!
