BLOG gets DXCC before I do

April 23, 2012

Well kind of…

Every now and again I will let you in on a little bit of data that has been given to me by the WordPress (my hosts here) Stats Monkey…  They from time to time tell me how I’m doing along with some hints on how to make things better.  They are usually a friendly group of bodies and if you had to put a blog someplace…  WordPress would not be a bad choice…  As you can tell it does seem to work for me….

Anyhow… What to write about on a very snowy and wet day in Ottawa???

Back in late February 2012 WordPress started keeping track of where my visitors were coming from.  Or to be more specific where the IP Numbers were assigned to….  This lets me know what countries I am getting visitors from.  In an Amateur Radio Blog this data could be interesting and here are the stats from February 25th to April 14th this year.

My blog made DXCC before I did…

The “Stats Monkey” is recovering from New Years

January 3, 2012

For those of who who were looking forward to my Year end Review (Part 2) please be patient as I should have it out later today….  For now I thought I would share a bit of a laff with you…

As you might know my host here (WordPress) gives you some stats that come complete in a posting for your blog.  Its nothing really that the regular stats that WordPress supplies to me does not really cover but they put it together nicely in a package and as I’m normally feeling lazy around this time of the year why not let them supply the posting to me…

An example of this posting could be found on VE3HG’s blog or VE3EMB’s blog which are both on my blogroll…

So I waited a little bit then sent off an email to WordPress which readed like this:

>
> I noticed that the stats monkey gave some fantastic info to me last Jan 1st but
> nothing this year.  I also saw that he gave some info to other wordpress blogs
> this year…
>
> Will the stats monkey be sending something to me so I do my year end review for
> 2011 blog post…
>
> thanks
>
> bob of va3qv.wordpress.com

so in my email when I checked it this afternoon came the following:

Hi Bob,

We only include blogs that got more than 30 views in November, and more than 1000 views overall in the year

Thanks.

Karim – Happiness Engineer
Automattic | WordPress.com

to which I replied (after I finished laffing….)

Hi Karim and thanks for the reply….

So my blog stats or just over 71,000 visitors in 2011 and just over 6,100 visitors in November 2011 don’t count?????

So now I figure that the Stats Monkey might be overtired or this one just slipped though the cracks  so anyway…  I will work on my year end review (part 2) which should be out later today and then the detailed stats which would be part 3 will take a little longer to compile unless WordPress jumps in to help a bit…

I have been exceptionally pleased with the service supplied by my host (WordPress) in the past and I am sure this will get rectified in the near future but I find it slightly amusing when they told me the reason they were not providing the stats…

2010 in review courtesy of VA3QV and WordPress

January 2, 2011

Todays posting is from a guest blogger… My host here… wordpress.com!!!

=============================

In my email this morning I found the following with an option to post it on line and seeing that its a Sunday Morning and I’m feeling lazy I thought why not…

But I will add some comments about the Year 2010 in Review…

Jan 2010 say us hit with the Haiti Earthquake disaster and many many visitors looking for any information they could find on that….

Feb 2010 saw us returning to normal here at the blog with posts on QRP/p operations including the SPAR Winter Field Day and the FYBO.  I also sold my FT857 in Feb…

March 2010 had me participating in a mini DXPediton to Foymount Ontario with a group of hams for the day and alot of the RAC Issues started to surface.

The 2010 Foymount DXPedition

April 2010 saw us turn the hit counter over 100.000 here at the blog along with a visit to the Iroquois Hamfest.

VE3NC at the door at Iroquois

May 2010 was busy with the Smith Falls Hamfest, some little hamfest at Dayton, I won the OVMRC Portable Station Contest and the week later the amateur community was saddened to learn that Larry VE3WEH became a silent key.

A good turnout at Smith Falls

June 2010 had Field Day.  I participated with the OVMRC club station VE3RAM and this year we were able to handle a piece of NTS Traffic for the International Space Station.

July 2010 started off with the RAC Canada Day Contest…Always a good time…

Happy Birthday Canada

August 2010 say Amateurs across Canada still b!tching about RAC but some of us still found the time to participate in the Lighthouse-Lightship weekend and some also participated in the first Maplecon QRP Weekend

September 2010 started really poorly with my best friend and my faithful dog Toby making his final trip to the Vets…  Things had to get better and I visited the Carp Hamfest where I picked up my VX8GR and later in the month I joined the Ottawa Amateur Radio Club.

October 2010 was a month where I found lots of time to get outside with my FT817 and operate as QRP/p  The highlight of the events was my first ever hike up King Mountain (just north of Ottawa) where I operated from the peak.  Contacts were made on 2m ssb, 6m ssb and 80m ssb.  At the end of October the RAC directors and executive met in Ottawa as the ongoing debate of RAC’s future continued.

The view from the Summit of King Mountain

November 2010 saw me at the Kingston Hamfest as well as participating in the LASA 8 Balloon flight.  This flight set a new world altitude record and flew from Perth Ontario to Maine USA.  The end of November saw me take over the helm of the RAC Social Media Department and now I find the time to manage the RAC Blog, RACTWEETS and the RAC Facebook Page.

December 2010 finds Amateur Radio taking a hit with the New Brunswick Driving while distracted Law and some very bad weather in Ontario and the East Coast.  The RAC Social Media side of things is growing in leaps and bounds…  We also finished off the year with over 92,000 visits for 2010 which was a 40,000 increase from 2009.

Now heres what WordPress had to say:

The stats helper monkeys at WordPress.com mulled over how this blog did in 2010, and here’s a high level summary of its overall blog health:

The Louvre Museum has 8.5 million visitors per year. This blog was viewed about 90,000 times in 2010. If it were an exhibit at The Louvre Museum, it would take 4 days for that many people to see it.

In 2010, there were 392 new posts, growing the total archive of this blog to 1236 posts. There were 917 pictures uploaded, taking up a total of 340mb. That’s about 3 pictures per day.

The busiest day of the year was January 13th with 2 views. The most popular post that day was Haiti Earthquake Amateur Radio Update.

Where did they come from?

The top referring sites in 2010 were en.wordpress.com, ovmrc.on.ca, ka3drr.blogspot.com, ve3clq.blogspot.com, and twitter.com.

Top 10 Search engine results

October 12, 2010

One of the best features of WordPress in my opinion is the way it collects stats for the blog operator.  It gives me the most popular posts, the least popular posts, along with what you entered in the search engine (Google/Yahoo etc) that caused you to come here…

You might remember me mentioning this when I said that the recent RAC problems were not a big draw…  Not a popular topic by a long shot…

Here are the top 10 Search engine terms used to find my blog …

2nd Place and my personal favourite

3rd place- but my wifes Personal Favourite

Now to be fair the top 10 list is about what I talk about.  You won’t see any other radios making it into the top 10 here as I operate Yaesu Radios…  As you know I have the FT 847, FT 897 with a FC40, FT817, FT 2400,  VX8GR and the FT 60.  I tend for the most part to talk about things I know about… (some of you may not agree) so as I operate Yaesu I talk about Yaesu…

I have mentioned other brands such as the Kenwoods APRS Line (700s and 710s) and I really like the DSTAR idea but have not bought one yet…

Its not that Yaesu is the best radio…  It is in my opinion but I do respect your opinions…  its that I operate Yaesu…

I’ll continue working on the stats and one day will give you a list of the top 10 all time posts and lets see if you agree with the masses…
